Its a fantastic game and I’m constantly amazed how much it keeps expanding.

It has jank and the survival/crafting part means you’ll need to return to previous specific places where specific materials respawn, but it also makes you learn the labyrinthine black-mesa-style map a lot and rewards you for finding shortcuts and building other bases or little things that make traversal faster.

Abiotic Factor and yes 10000% like im surprised it’s not going viral the way Valheim did. It has a much more satisfying gameplay experience imo. Like it’s seriously like if they made half life 1 co op and added survival mechanics. But the survival shit isn’t SUPER punishing, like you can starve to death but it really just ends up being you have to do some maintenance chores every real life hour or so.

My gf found it on steam earlier this summer and bought it for both of us even though she doesn’t really like survival games and she’s been almost more eager to play it than i’ve been. It’s 1-6 player co op! We’ve probably got 50-60 hours played and my estimation based on spoilers is at least another 15-20 to go, but i piddle around in our base a lot (or make secondary bases that only i end up using lol)

Can confirm. I will go way out of my way to avoid water in games. I killed the shark in half life 1 from the land so I didn’t have to go in there with it

There’s a big fucking shark thing in this and like it’s really not the biggest deal but even with the best vision it’s MURKY and it could be anywhere and ughhhh i don’t like it. I have a personal teleporter and half the time i fall in the water im like NOPE I’M OUT OF HERE and go back home. I even have the thing that scares it away but like ugh.

Ive literally only even seen it once i just don’t like it 😫

Lmao. I just made a base directly in voussoir.

Im exactly at the objectives you’re at! Playing solo apocalyptic, its been really fun but getting to the point where crafting requires grinding for a lot of materials.

Yeah it’s gotten grindy a bit for us too sometimes, relying on specific weapons i.e. the grinder gun made rebar scarce. Now we’re out of basic metal scrap because some idiot keeps using it for shit (me). Now i have a laser gun and a deatomizer which have been generally enough for most encounters, and i carry around a laser collector

Ive read spoilers on the wiki and it still feels like a lot of game time to go even though we’ve been playing most of the last month and a half

let me tell youse guys about my equipment, first i have a laser pistol which is cool because i can recharge it by cranking my hog, then I have a de-atomizer which is cool because sometimes guys have too many atoms. Then I have an exor flail which is made from some pipes, some windchimes, and some quills from some dead guys. Then I have a hammer that repairs itself, a KNIFE, a drill, and then a teleporter to Base 1 and then a teleporter to the base I made that only I use and wasn’t nearly as useful as I thought it would be. that’s all, folks

I am currently finishing up the manufacturing sector. I’m playing solo and I’m not excited for when I get to this part. It’s not going to be a fun time with how low visibility underwater is in this game.

As a side note, I very rarely buy games new or even like survival crafting style games, but holy crap this game is so good.

It’s not as bad as it could be, if you know exactly where to swim to at least. But the first time really sucks even though there’s only the one enemy and it’s really only lazily interested in you and you can scare it off with an x-ray lamp

      spoiler

When you’re looking at the dome with the photon detectors and portal to the neutrino mapper inside from the rest of the hydroplant, the entrance is maybe halfway between the dome and the cave wall on the left? You gotta dive down to it, then inside, then navigate up through a maze of shit until you’re inside it and just gotta sprint to the surface to breathe. Be careful going up and down super fast because there’s fans inside that can kill you

But even knowing exactly where to go like idk i saw the darkwater beast coming at me once and was like NOPE I’M MAKING A BRIDGE. If the hardlight bridge didn’t extend all the way like it does honestly i was gonna turn off the bridge support settings and just make a long ass bridge lol

but holy crap this game is so good.

And yeah i agree, it does survival stuff really well while also having a good storyline and a lot of world building to go through and concrete objectives to work towards BUT ALSO it really nails the vibe of “It’s half life but what if Gordon Freeman had to live off of vending machines, find places to poop and worry about extradimensional stalkers killing him in his sleep”

I was watching someone’s playthrough and I genuinely had to turn the stream off after like a dozen hours because I knew I had to play it. I mostly gave up on the survival/crafting genre because all the heavy hitters just didn’t do much for me. I always play solo and they all quickly feel like they devolve into housekeeping and inventory management sims.

The only one I ever really enjoyed was Subnautica, specifically because of some of the non-thematic reasons you mentioned for this game being so good. The survival aspects are actually really well done without making the game feel like a chore (it’s so weird how effective adding a tiny little mini game to things just makes it feel less obnoxious), the setting and story is interesting and well crafted, and most of the tedious aspects of gameplay are given intended solutions in the crafting trees.

The setting and storytelling is just so masterfully done that it always keeps you engaged. The combat is a little bit lame, but it’s mostly because of AI being kind of dumb. I’m playing on a lower difficulty though so maybe that’s the reason.
