I think the real ancient ancient peoples pretty much thought that their gods were only interested in local affairs. You know, we descended from x god or y god made us, but he didn’t make those funny looking people we ran into one time, those people were made by some other god we’re not familiar with.

But I’m certainly no historian, I’d also be curious if anyone has an informed answer here.
