As mod on that (gossip) comm I agree. To be honest, I also think it’s unnecessary to have two separate dunking comms based on whether someone is a public figure or a random person. A lot of times that distinction can be quite blurry, and I don’t blame people for choosing to post in Slop instead, as that is the more active comm.
Reunite El Chisme and Slop to a single comm, and remove slop’s rule #8. “Do not post public figures, these should be posted to c/gossip”
Yes please end this madness
I think it was only a very small number of people who wanted them split in the first place.
The line is fuzzy and vibes based and in general seems to create hassle more than anything else. I say merge.
i agree with the merge. I usually just post to whichever comm comes to mind first (usually slop) when i want to post a random thing.
I still think this site should just be 100% exclusive posting on main
Yes. Like I said in the other thread, I say slop is slop regardless of its profile.
I would suggest a possible middleground of requiring tagging of literal nobody, no-engagement slop with something like [dregs], and the highest profile ruling-class-monster-saying-something-absurd-and-horrible posts with something like [premium] or [hellworld] or the like and letting the big fuzzy middleground go untagged or just get a [slop] prefix, especially since this is low-stakes stuff that can just be edited in if someone forgets. Do a little light social engineering to make it part of the bit so people remember it better and that would probably be all the categorization needed.

I like this idea the most so far
IIRC, the post tagging feature (and filtering by tags) is something in the works in mainline Lemmy, isn’t it? I think that would solve the main argument in defense of having separate comms (e.g., people not wanting to engage with [screenshots of] the 10-followers-on-Bluesky bad take havers).
I’m just suggesting putting the text in the title, but actual tags and filtering would also be a very good feature, especially if it’s less awkward to use than reddit’s dogshit “flair” system where the filter is just doing a search for specific flairs.
As long as it’s the trotskites merging with the marxist-leninists and not the other way around.

I never post in either comm correctly! I would like them merged.
close down food and turn slop into a cooking comm
Seconded. I desperately need someone to develop the wifeslop-guyslop spectrum. Boywifeslop, polyslop, _solo_polyslop, neochow, lesbian breakfast! The possibilities are endless!
Only if it means the slop tank finally gets left alone, let our piggies feast in peace

(this is a yes)
There needs to be more comms, not less. A major problem with The Dunk Tank is that “generic dunking comm” is far too vague. At the time that The Dunk Tank closed, it was coming close to outgrowing the size of the chapo comm. Also sometimes people would post like actual news stories into The Dunk Tank, as if that was comparable to lemmy drama, which was very annoying. If you merge gossip with slop now, slop will probably be the largest comm on the site. We will become slopbear.
What is even the purpose of having “generic dunking comm”? It does not convey a targeted message. The comm creates a culture of condescension. The purpose of the comm becomes a general hatred, rather than targeted anger. More appropriate would be targetted dunking comms which express a clear message, ex r/fuckcars is a community of people who dunk on car dependency.
Then there’s the problem of the slop comm being used as some sort of catch-all containment board. Just a few days ago, some mods moved a news story about the top woman twitch streamer saying that she was sexually assaulted, to the slop comm. What sense does that make? Is the intention to say that she deserves to be dunked on? The story was clearly culturally relevant and many users thought showed interest in the post, and yet mods thought the most appropriate place for it was the generic dunking comm.
More often I find myself lacking a comm to post something that I think is interesting.
What sense does that make?
Hey! You want to know a secret? It doesn’t make any sense. Want to know how I know? I’m the one who moved it. I actually meant to move it to c/gossip, but moved it to c/slop because I had at least two reports saying to move that post and somehow fucked the move.
By the time I caught the error the other post was past the 4 hour kill zone for threads getting ranked higher in the feed.
You know what else I think? It wouldn’t have been correct to put it on c/gossip either. Moving a sexual assault story into GOSIP? There were several comments when I saw the reports saying it should be in gossip.
One thing I’ll say is that this whole site is a dunk site. If the comm is only about dunking then it might as well be c/main at that point. You’re right in that regard. It should be more focused and not on dunking because that’s a given.
Instead of c/slop and c/gossip we need a pop culture or snark comm and a brigading comm for all the shit takes made by drones on bsky and reddit. But what we really need are mods who are invested in the comms. A community is nothing without a mod willing to curate it. Otherwise you get slop in my gossip and I get gossip in your slop.
What ever comes after this feed back should be helmed by those who want to enforce and curate the comms. If you’re taking it on because you have the time and that’s it, I don’t know if that’s going to be effective enough.
the only actually correct comment in this whole thread we need more comms
Just a few days ago, some mods moved a news story about the top woman twitch streamer saying that she was sexually assaulted, to the slop comm. What sense does that make? It should’ve gone to /c/videos, which is where most streamer and e-drama go if they haven’t been posted in /c/slop or /c/gossip already. The actual post wasn’t that great because it was just some shitty article summarizing what happened. What should’ve happened was someone posting Emiru giving her account or the footage of the SA (with appropriate CW of course). Both would make sense to post in /c/videos because both are video footage.
Yes. “Public figure” is a meaninglessly nebulous term in the context of online fame/infamy.
JD Vance said Hasan shocked Hasan’s dog. Does This information get posted in slop, or, gossip? Now that JD Vance, the Vice President of the United States, has talked about Hasan, do we now file posts about Hasan under Gossip or is he a Slop? How many subscribers should someone need to be a Gossip post?
Clearly that post is about Hasan’s dog, who isn’t a public figure, not about Hasan or JD Vance, both of whom are public figures (because they both have Wikipedia pages and more than 100k followers).
I suggest we merge them into a community referencing a container that you would throw or perhaps… dunk trash into, maybe some kind of tank.
I still contend that changing the name to the dunk court would’ve fixed the problem with a single word and actually represent what dunking on our ideological enemies really meant to everyone using the term
this 100% but i suppose we’re slop pigs now

i had to smh at the last dunkmetapost when we had an admin say that “dunk” terminology is racist, like way to misunderstand the entire reason for changing the name from dunk_tank. like nobody and i mean literally not a single soul on the entire planet or any other place in the galaxy is referring to dunk tanks when they say “dunk on 'em”

The trash can
The dumpster
The origins of the term dunk tank are really fucked up. They might seem innocent today, but they were part of the oppression of poc
Dunk tank has racist origins and it was worthwhile to separate ourselves from that term
Fair, I was just trying to do an admittedly bad bit about coming full circle to having a single comm for all the slop posts.
I vote yes.
Sounds good to me, it’s pretty confusing to have gossip and slop as two different comms.
