BREAKING: South Korea’s special prosecutor additionally indicts former president Yoon Suk Yeol on general treason charge (일반이적죄), alleging he ordered drone operations into North Korea in October 2024 to provoke retaliation and justify his failed December 2024 martial law.
Specific charge is Article 99 of the Criminal Act “Benefiting Enemy by Other Methods” - carries life imprisonment or minimum 3 years. Prosecutors say military secrets leaked when drones crashed near Pyongyang, delivering military benefit to North Korea.
Prosecutors initially explored Article 92 “Inducement of Foreign Aggression” (외환유치죄) charge which carries death penalty or life imprisonment, but requires proving he conspired with North Korea. Concluded evidence insufficient, opted for lesser Article 99 charge instead.
Yoon was also charged with abuse of authority. Both charges stem from the drone operations case and are separate from the main insurrection charges (내란죄) still under investigation.
Prosecutors revealed forensic analysis of former Defence Counterintelligence Commander Yeo In-hyung’s phone showing detailed planning from October 2024. Memos listed specific North Korean targets including “Pyongyang, Wonsan foreign tourist area, Kim Jong un rest stops”.
Memos show systematic planning with dates: 18 Oct “create unstable situations”, 23 Oct discussing “balloons, drones, local shelling”, 27 Oct “martial law violations - priority arrests”, 5 Nov “enemy action must come first”, 6 Nov “joint military-police essential”.
Also indicted: former defence minister Kim Yong-hyun (general treason + abuse of power), former counterintelligence chief Yeo In-hyung (general treason + abuse of power), drone operations commander Kim Yong-dae (obstruction charges only - excluded from treason).
the magnitude of this attempted coup plot is just crazy, attack the DPRK with drones to provoke retaliation could’ve easily spiralled into a huge mess in that region and further. This clown deserves the death penalty.
Yeah what the fuck
He was also planning a false flag attack, with confirmed stockpiles of DPRK uniforms and weapons found as part of the plot.
I’m sure none of his co-conspirators will be identified though. It was all just one little smol bean president acting by himself. Surely.
The next question is did he act alone or was this idea baked in Washington, DC?
I don’t think the US was involved, at least not any more so than any action taken by the south Korean government necessarily has US involvement. So they probably looked at the plans and said sure.
The US had little to gain by this coup and there was little threat of a non-us aligned alternative to make them go into normal regime change mode.Yeah, I also don’t really think the Americans had any real interest in making him do this shit. It seemed like a desperate (and half-baked) attempt at consolidating power after losing your majority that allowed you to govern / legislate. And the whole “make the ROK soldiers look like Chinese / DPRK soldiers” thing seems like a way to draw in the americans, rather than something that they would have come up with themselves.
