Wow, it’s pretty uncommon that they actually execute these guys, no? Aren’t they usually changed to life in prison unless there’s some additional offense?
Yup, mostly it’s a two year reprieve where the the execution would only be carried out if there are additional violations or if the convicted was uncooperative. According to the article, the court said:
“The amount of bribes received by Bai Tianhui was extremely large, the crime’s circumstances were particularly serious and the social impact was particularly severe.”
So they decided to go straight to capital punishment.

Well deserved tbh, don’t think of the bribe money itself but what that money was used to get in terms of favours. It undermines the entire system.
Doing this to the worst cases will put a healthy fear into anyone else currently committing the same crimes and help clean up the system.
but what that money was used to get in terms of favours. It undermines the entire system.
Absolutely. Tigers and Flies wasn’t just about restoring public trust, it was started soon after the neutralization of dozens of CIA sources, who had been uncovered with the help of Iran’s own counter-espionage. Before the campaign, corruption allowed for the CIA to effectively pay-to-win in the 90s/00s - they could simply bribe officials to promote assets into more powerful positions.
Xi’s anti-corruption drive goes brrr.

I mostly oppose capital punishment and do in fact think this is an L for china and Xi Jinping.
I am also really not losing any sleep for this piece of shit.
Is it wrong? Yes, yes it is. Is it more wrong than, say, for profit prisons? Three strike laws? Fucking kids for cash? Not on your life.
So yeah, it’s bad… Boo fucking hoo.
I heard that for those cases capital punishment was supported by the people and that despite the Party wanting to eventually abolish it there were cases where they’d be disregarding public opinion which they don’t do for democracy reasons
Also when someone is massively powerful, with big money and network, I wonder if it’s really possible to actually keep them in prison. If you don’t put them in inhumane conditions they might be able to keep doing corruption and sabotage from the inside, just like mafia lords often keep leading operations from their cells (and a US puppet is way more dangerous than a mafia lord to a country)
It is real hard to make the case against capital punishment when it is hella rad.
Well, yeah. I’m saying that I oppose it on principle. Not that I have a problem with this pos getting got. I would also ultimately like prison abolition but in our current system there are people who should wind up in prison simply because that’s the only system we have for dealing with them, alongside a shitload more who shouldn’t.
For those keeping track at home, it would have taken him 6 times this bribery to become a billionaire.
eat shit
rare capital punishment W
