红歌 is “Red songs” It is not a specialized musical term, and to this day, it has no strict definition. It can simply be understood as “red revolutionary songs” — that is, songs related to the Communist Party and the communist movement. From a cultural exchange perspective, “red songs” are a product of the fusion between Chinese and Western cultures. Some argue that the term “red song” has only been used in the past decade or so; previously, it was referred to as the “main theme.”

In July 2008, the city of Chongqing launched the first campaign to sing “red songs.” The municipal party committee and city government issued the Opinions on Broadly Promoting the Singing of Red Classic Songs, requiring that the whole city carry out mass cultural activities on important commemorative days. The theme of singing red songs was: “Sing the praises of the Communist Party, of socialism, of reform and opening-up, of the people’s army, of the masses, and of the great motherland.”

From then on, “singing red songs” became a required activity and political task for all departments in Chongqing on significant commemorative dates. This is seen as the key moment when the concept of “red songs” became widely popularized. “Red Song Festivals” in places like Jiangxi also began to gain influence.

Later, Bo Xilai, then Party Secretary of Chongqing, proposed not only to sing red songs but also to create new red songs. By the time of the 90th anniversary of the founding of the Chinese Communist Party, the term “red song” had become officially established.

In late April 2011, to celebrate the Party’s 90th anniversary, the Chongqing Municipal Propaganda Department actively responded to the Sing for China program by launching a red song singing craze, requiring everyone to learn and sing 36 songs.
