    “Escapism” oh please.

HOI players are playing for escapism too, but there’s a reason half the community are fascists while the other half are communists. The fantasy that players are choosing to play for their “escapism” directly lines up with what they are.

I think this true, but only for a smaller subset of players. My Stellaris empires have ranged the full spectrum of communist utopian to slavery and genocidal exterminators. Similarly for my many Vicky playthroughs.

Ehh, I mostly play interesting (alt-)historical situations. A lot of it is stuff like re-forming old empires. Stuff I would absolutely oppose in real life. It’s not really ideological for me, it’s mainly about forming interesting borders.

They spiritually originated from the late 90’s games like Stars which were little more than spreadsheets. They just added some graphics and voila, instant success proving people craved this.

lol when I was like 10 I would make “maps” (random hand drawn shapes) in MS paint then change them around as if they were countries taking land.

I don’t even remember what gave me the idea to do that. Autism was definitely involved even though I didn’t know it at the time.

I never play games for escapism. I play them because they’re like complex puzzles to be solved. These people are always telling on themselves.

Alt-history stuff is usually in the strategy category. To me, it’s more about min-maxing communist Turks to destroy the inferior British and their population of filthy casuals.

Here’s a fun challenge, how do you get communist Ireland to take back the occupied lands, liberate Scotland and wales, and puppet England without joining the comintern.
