I know there must be a term for this sort of thing, where they do the opposite of putting themselves in someone else’s shoes and instead imagine everyone else has exactly the same viewpoint as them, just flipped and reversed. (Or they think everyone secretly agrees with them, they just pretend not to in order to be contrarian)
Projection?
I guess that would be the term, yeah. I thought it might be one of those fancy psychology words. Maybe if we use the Latin and call it proiectura or something it will make it sound fancier.
I looked it up and have two points: Naive realism, the assumption that yours is the default, objective, and correct view, while others are biased or contrarian which corresponds to the last thing you said
Also, it’s not what you were asking about, but it still felt really on-the-nose:

Naive realism is a good term for what I was struggling to describe, thanks!
I have seen that second one used a lot when it comes to any sort of western accusation against other countries, just look at accusations of “Russia is going to genocide Ukraine” (while Ukraine was literally trying to do that in the Donbass) or “China is trying to do economic imperialism and debt traps” (when those countries were literally only suffering because of the west doing that to them already.)
False consensus effect.
