Liberal media masters have been calling the Russian invasion of Ukraine a genocide for years now. These are just their unthinking targets. Many Westerners’ political thought process goes little deeper than just repeating something they heard.
I think the segue to Iran is just for the Russophobia, not alleging genocide by Iran. But if their media figures started telling them that Iran was committing genocide, they’d be saying that, too!

Americans never really left behind their islamophobia, they just weren’t getting whipped up for hate against particular regions of the world. They still use all the same words: terrorism, state sponsors of terror, authoritarian, X “against their own people”, dictator, strongman, etc. The main vehicle of racist/islamophobic denigration is the use of a specific more negative lexicon to describe the same things that they or allies do. The PFLP is designated terrorist for fighting against occupation and even vaguely connected groups like Samidoun are oppressed. Actual Ukrainian Nazis that do hate crimes againsr ethnic Russians get asked to hide their sonnenrad tattoos and are called freedom fighters. Current islamophobia is very tied up in “Israel” discourse so Hasbara terminology is common, namely conflating all Palestinians with “terrorist”.
