As always, we ask that in order to participate in the weekly megathread, one self-identifies as some form of disabled, which is broadly defined in the community sidebar:

“Disability” is an umbrella term which encompasses physical disabilities, emotional/psychiatric disabilities, neurodivergence, intellectual/developmental disabilities, sensory disabilities, invisible disabilities, and more. You do not have to have an official diagnosis to consider yourself disabled.

Mask up, love one another, and stay alive for one more week.

I saw a quote about GP receptionists on youtube today: “Their commitment to being so aggressively unhelpful is impressive.” So true, and I’d say it actually applies to the entire medical “profession”, not just receptionists.

I shuold defend my chosen profession, but really doctors deserve no grace on any issues.

If i may wax philosophical, beyond the fact that medical school does not sort for ethical concern or empathy, there is a problem with the roles of the physician. A physician is supposed to have a set of defined roles, but in many systems doing austerity they’ve had the role of medical gatekeeper added to it. Which is a huge conflict of interest. A physician is supposed to be a zealous advocate for their patient the same way a lawyer is supposed to zealously advocate for their client, but we’ve also charged doctors with worrying about costs and preventing people from accessing “too much” care, resulting in a gigantic conflict of interest and only the representative of the medical system itself are the ones who can affect their careers.

The relationship between a physician and the accountant should be antagonistic. They have opposing interests. But we have mandated that physicians both play their role of patienr advocate and also make decisions based on matters that aren’t patient wellbeing.
