I’m sure you know, but it’s worth noting for others that Marx lived a lot of his life in a bad financial situation because a radical communist like him could hardly get a professorship and the newspapers that he worked for kept getting shut down (usually for reasons beyond his control having to do with criticizing monarchs or something) and he was run out of like three different countries. He still nonetheless worked as a journalist for papers from Cologne to New York throughout his life.
IIRC he also tried unionizing a bunch of places after he got home to Germany from the Franco-Prussian War where he was a war correspondent. His goal was to start a revolution in Germany, mirroring the one in France. Since strikes and unions were illegal at the time, Marx was eventually recognized by employers as an instigator. He then got blacklisted by every industry in the country, which is why he left.
