Organize crime is basically capitalism outside of the law, it’s all about profits. The Mafia, Yakuza, Triads have all been used to attack Communist movements. The triads were chased out of the Mainland after the CPC came to power. They fled to Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan and South East Asian countries. After the Deng reforms, they re-established their presence in the Mainland. If the Gambinos beat up scabs, it was probably because the Unions paid them more than the bosses, not because they were for worker’s rights.
Mafia were very connected to the american labor movement in the 20th century, often taking leadership positions in unions (look into Jimmy hoffa) this was not an altruistic or ideological position, it just allowed them to embezzle money out of union dues and pensions, and allowed them to threaten strikes on businesses that did not pay the mafia racketeer money.

Have they been able to purge society of these people again, or is it still a struggle because of the market reforms incentivizing crime?
