This is the intellectual that the old communist movement was against. The culture of intellectualism distances them from events as non-participants where their primary interest is academic curiosity. They befriend evil people and are friendly with them in the advancement of that curiosity. It all becomes a curious puzzle to observe rather than to participate in and bring about revolution.

The intellectuals are no good. As a distinct group they are easily manipulate by the bourgeoisie by simply giving them access to anything that stimulates them intellectually, and such access is trivial to the bourgeoisie’s network of connections.

As the new movement grows in strength it will learn to see them as a problem as well.

I will however say one thing, it is possible for the proletarian state to manipulate the intellectuals just as easily as the bourgeois state. As a group they are not revolutionary, they are self-serving of their academic curiosity culture. Blow smoke up their arse or give them access to resources that allow them to blow smoke up their own arse and they can be allies, but it is transactional.

Ok but a lot of them were liberals, do we forget that the liberals are not our allies because they participated in a good protest? And participating in protest is something many people still do in a self-serving way to advance their personal brand. Even Keir Starmer participated in many, building his brand as a “leftist wink wink” until fucking over literally everyone.

You can’t look at Chomsky being chummy with these people and justify it with his left wing writing without acknowledging that he is using academic intellectual culture to professionally distance his emotions in order to be chummy and gain what he can from doing so for personal whatever. It’s very obviously unprincipled behaviour that puts the intellectual ahead of the leftism as the first priority.

How long was his total time in custody? Even a day? And by this act of great sacrifice, we are to forgive him for decades spent in his ivory tower shitting on actual radicals and disparaging countless activists who risked and sacrificed much more in the fight against US imperialism, spending years in prison or even losing their lives?

Chomsky has been a piece of shit keeping up false pretenses for several decades and his legacy should be regarded with contempt.

Obligatory link to an essay on him that I like.
