god this show rules. and tony gilroy clearly knows his shit, talking about the process of the show is kind of amazing. his actual young stalin bit was great, no one in hollywood thinks about this shit! and if done well it’s great!

do you like genre stories? (heists, prison breaks, spy stuff, cops as villains hunting down heroes) do you like digging into the logistics of financing a revolution, and the ideological conflicts that arise in a “big tent” rebellion against an empire, where you have anarchists and social democrats and libertarians all fighting a common enemy? do you like amazing sci-fi production design, costuming, physical sets and on location filming? do you like fantastic actors working with tight scripts and just generally well made filmmaking?

one of the best shows i’ve ever seen, and it’s genuinely amazing the stuff they’ve done. feels like it was made by a small passionate team of leftists who happened to fall into disney money.

i’ve seen people say the first few episodes are a little slow, but i still like them. there have been 3 main arcs so far, and all 3 have had very different climaxes, but all of them are amazing. super worth watching.

          the show features

          • the worlds most pathetic incel rent a cop
          • several debates about revolutionary politics that make it clear that the showrunners have done the reading
          • actual, no bullshit queer characters with names and personalities and major roles in the plot
          • some of the tensest action scenes i’ve ever seen
          • no force stuff or jedi 10 episodes in, and even the big imperial symbols (stormtroopers, tie fighters, star destroyers) take a long time to show up and are treated as more than disposable enemies, and as genuinely frightening and evil tools of fascism
          • “what if aoc was secretly funding maoist guerillas in latin america”
          • the showrunners asking “what do the imperial bigwigs think of all this? exactly what the american equivalents do!”

    Yea, it’s pretty good folks.

I’m sure there will be many a paper written about the specific kind of prison featured - it’s a bit of an antithesis to the panopticon in some interesting ways.
