    Ukrainians didn’t “hold their pride march in a subway”.

    10 minutes after the 2024 Kyiv pride march started the marchers were dispersed and ordered onto trains by police in response to a large and violent right wing counter demonstration. The Ukrainian right has organised violent counter demonstrations every year since it’s inception in 2012. They regularly prematurely end the march and have hospitalised dozens of marchers.

    Violent crimes against queer people are not legally considered hate crimes in Ukraine. The punishment for assaulting a queer person is often just a small (less than 100 Euro) fine. The main goal of Kyiv pride is to change this.

      Chanting “glory to the heroes” and “make Russia pay”, protesters called for tougher legal protection in the form of a hate crime law, equal marriage rights and more weapons for the military.
