I’ve always thought these are dumb but I’m starting to think I understand the appeal and wanna try getting into them. It would be cool if it had some strategic or customization elements, is available on PC, and can pretty much fully be played with a mouse. It doesn’t have to be totally idle I’m okay clicking around sometimes I just don’t want to be that engaged. Like a background thought kinda game.
What’s the scoop on this weird ass genre
I don’t know if it counts as an idle game anymore since you actually play it and all of these other idle games have evolved to be something you now play for days or weeks or months at a time. But the original is a browser game called Universal Paperclips and I still argue that it is one of the very very best of them, primarily because it has a very obvious political message about capitalism.

That’s definitely not the original idle game. Progress Quest was released in 2002, Cookie Clicker I think was the first game to explode the browser based formula in 2013. Universal Paperclips was just one of the first to make the incremental mechanic work to tell a story, instead of telling a story alongside the idle game.
I gotta read the comments before posting lol, you recommended the same game I did
It’s fine I do the same thing all the time
Love it
