If there is one thing the workers can’t stand, it is occasionally getting paid to go fishing or crack open a cold one and grill outdoors.

Most of us don’t even get paid for them.
My current sales job is the only one I have ever had that gives holiday pay.
I worked in food service and retail for a long time before I stumbled my way into manufacturing, and federal holidays were actually the worst. Some of the busiest days of the year when we had to serve all these hogs. Some places at least paid time and a half, but many don’t even do that.
And they’re always saying shit like, “Can’t believe they’re making you work on [holiday name]!” Like, yeah, you’re the reason why
Yep. I hate and despise every. single. holiday. with every fiber of my soul. and i hate that i hate them.
my parents: “but the holiday party starts at 11 am don’t you want to see your sis!”
me: “i’ll be lucky to get off by 4 pm and still have to shower because i am a sweaty disgusting mess”
them: “it’s 5pm where are you? everyone is leaving!”
me, exhausted and driving an hour and a half to get to them hating the fucking holidays and they forget every time (my family works civil service)
I always feel really bad when I forget to buy something on a holiday.
Yep. I worked at 711 for 6 years and 4th of July/memorial day were the worst.
Yeah huge numbers of the worst off workers already don’t get shit for holidays and have to deal with everyone else’s privilege on those days. The rational part of my brain doesn’t want any working person to lose that benefit but part of me really couldn’t give a shit. Especially so because any time I say “maybe everything should be closed on holidays, not just your job” to a white collar worker they act like I said we should ritually sacrifice their dog.
My last job had holiday pay. And travel pay. And health insurance. On paper it paid less than my current job, but god damn did it pay so much more in practice.
