The police are extremely averse to investigating any death that could feasibly be a suicide, and I’d imagine that’s even more salient when the victim is a minority. I’ve heard second-hand stories of this happening in my town under even more suspicious circumstances, they will do literally anything to avoid extra work.
It probably also doesn’t help their image to leave a possible murder unsolved, and a lot of those go unsolved as it is. To admit that there was a lynching and you either can’t make progress or don’t think it’s worth the necessary police resources has to be bad PR.
Also sometimes they’re clearly covering for the perpetrator, as when BLM got somewhat decapitated by exactly this method, hanging and all.
