      I mean at the time there was some backlash to McCarthyism.

      If it was strictly called McCarthyism there still would be. We in the US are just sticklers for terms and are unable to recognize the repackaging if given a new name

        You can use that to your advantage though, just describe communism but call it “freedomism” and watch all the libs agree how great an idea it sounds.

            The problem is it is a bait and switch, and people don’t like to be tricked, and will just return to their programming once they’ve found it out. I’ve had a lot of success informally discussing socialist concepts with people, never hiding it, just not outright stating it is “communist” and that works pretty well, not doing it as a “gotcha” but as regular navel gazing can help people slowly but surely become more class conscious. The main thing is that they have to do the legwork themselves.
