I have seen also libs praising the old man who was against “violent protests” because its an imperial trap and that it should be a lesson to “PSL idiots”. Like Krennic basically made that conference to enforce “yeah we are going to genocide ghorman if we dont find an synthetic alternative”. The death of millions of ghormans (remember it was only 800k who were in the direct way of the mining operation) was already pre-planned, they were just crafting a reason.
No matter how civil the ghor were, they are lambs to the slaughter. Cassian vs Luthen’s fight was about that, Both didnt know that Ghorman was lost either way really, yes, but thematically it was about using that situation to accentuate discontent in the imperial core vs trying to help ghormans survive (which was futile).
The imperial plan didn’t even require the Ghor to be violent. The ISD employed inexperienced cops to do crowd control, increasing the chance of them being overly violent against protestors. The higher ups then ordered that one of those cops be shot during the protest. This caused the cops to turn violent. The massacre was happening one way or another. Ghor didn’t have any real input into how that was going down. It’s either go down singing or go down swinging.
Coincidentally I was listening to some Chalmers Johnson interviews from 2004 and he mentioned this exact scenario playing out in US foreign policy. This is a real thing that America has done to justify mass murder.
Community Note: It was a group of inexperienced Imperial troops being put out in a hostile situation intentionally. With an Imperial sniper who took the first shot at the inexperienced Imperial troops to get them to start attacking the Ghor in the plaza.
