Someone said DnD is a perfect example of this, except:

DnD 3e was better than 1e and 2e, and 4e came about because video game popularity was something WotC were trying to get in on, and 5e came about because Pathfinder 1e stole (took back?) like, half their fanbase.

The game getting worse over time (5e is terrible, FIGHT ME!) is literally because of profit seeking.

accessible game yeah, but not onboarding for “actual” fighting games. he’s been antagonistic toward the competitive scene at times, going so far as adding a tripping mechanic (irc every directional input has like a 1% chance of making you fall down) to one of the games to fuck with them.

the uh, conduct, of smash players and the substantial differences in mechanical design are why there’s a bigger rift between smash and the rest of the FGC (some people would be mad i put it that way) than there is between 2D and 3D fighters.

Smash felt like a party game to me more than a fighting game. It’s fun as hell to throw Pokeballs and other random stuff around and see how ridiculous the stage gets, seeing people flying off the screen and chaos everywhere. Cool that people like to turn off all the items and play their way. I think it’s more fun when you don’t take it too seriously 🤷‍♂️
