(Found this on twitter)

Someone said DnD is a perfect example of this, except:

DnD 3e was better than 1e and 2e, and 4e came about because video game popularity was something WotC were trying to get in on, and 5e came about because Pathfinder 1e stole (took back?) like, half their fanbase.

The game getting worse over time (5e is terrible, FIGHT ME!) is literally because of profit seeking.

    females join…

aight imma stop right there. i see where this is going this is incel shit. “a community doesn’t feel the same when it grows” is common enough sentiment but feeling entitled to anything and blaming it on wh*res and chads infiltrating your god given community is baby shit.

Females join the vast majority/totally male hobby in an effort to not play the game, but to attract attention largely uncontested from the boys.

So girls can’t have a hobby now?

Tourist incel fucks don’t realise women were in their hobby way before they were 100% of the time.

to teach people how to play fighting games.

that’s not… he made like every design choice to not be like fighting games. and that’s perfectly fine other than the groomers and poor hygiene that ensued.

accessible game yeah, but not onboarding for “actual” fighting games. he’s been antagonistic toward the competitive scene at times, going so far as adding a tripping mechanic (irc every directional input has like a 1% chance of making you fall down) to one of the games to fuck with them.

the uh, conduct, of smash players and the substantial differences in mechanical design are why there’s a bigger rift between smash and the rest of the FGC (some people would be mad i put it that way) than there is between 2D and 3D fighters.

Smash felt like a party game to me more than a fighting game. It’s fun as hell to throw Pokeballs and other random stuff around and see how ridiculous the stage gets, seeing people flying off the screen and chaos everywhere. Cool that people like to turn off all the items and play their way. I think it’s more fun when you don’t take it too seriously 🤷‍♂️

I love that this comic shows that everyone is having fun and having a good time except for the two gatekeeping nerds. Like, if they just chilled out and were willing to hang out with people who aren’t literal clones of themselves, they’d probably have a great time. My dnd group has a mix of nerds, theater kids and footy players, and we have a great time.

This whole comic just completely falls apart if you ask “wait why were the nerd guys playing in the first place if not to have fun socially?”

If they don’t want to just chill and have fun because they want to do their hobby more competitively, then they could just use some tournament or league format that lends itself to competition. This is a skill issue.

i don’t think it’s about competitiveness, i think it’s about social drift within the hobby. they’re blaming the wrong thing, of course, but there’s cases like early dubstep sounding nothing like the dubstep that got huge and people who liked the original thing got bowled over in a way that probably sucks to experience.

I see what you mean, you’re probably right. But in the case of most hobbies that I can think of, if you aren’t anti-social you’d always prefer simply having more people to share the hobby with, and if they’re having trouble keeping up with all the rules it should be possible to get them to learn the ropes with a bit of grace.

Especially video games since the rules are hardcoded into the game, so it’s impossible for people to “casualize” it.

            Normal people:

            1. Have multiple hobbies, so they don’t suffer an existential crisis when one of their many hobbies starts sucking.

            2. Find another hobby because no one’s too old to reinvent or discover something new about themselves.

            3. Appreciate having another thing that they can use to socially connect other people with.

Only socially and emotionally stunted manchildren care this much about preserving the alleged purity of their pointless hobbies.

i really don’t like the fans of the loli character that porky added to a game series i liked and would rather they not be in my community if that was the only reason they picked it up.

If anything stuff like this illustrates why people get outcasted, you can have fun and be useful and do fun things, but if youre going to be antisocial and a dick about how it isnt yours anymore, youre going to be ostracized as much as you alienate yourself.

    This is an incel meme.

Also if the “originals” were happy with the game before they can just keep playing it that way with each other. The thing that tends to prevent that is a lack of control over the game itself, as it is a privately owned game trying to make money, not entertain you just 'cuz. And in that sense, the “originals” are misplacing their frustrations at not having the control to even just play their game with each other and putting the blame on others who are “playing it wrong”. The people forcing you to play with “casuals” or not at all are capitalists, not “females”.

Dudebros forgot they’re the dudebros. Like, it was my 8 year old niece who introduced me to Star Wars. She loves it and I wanted to get into it to better relate to her.

They bullied Jagex into not doing any pride stuff because it offended their suburbanite sensibilities. Fucking OSRS, a community known for its toxicity was clowning on Jagex for being so spineless. Plus they tried and failed miserably to gentrify furries

Wow, is it any coincidence these self-coronated “standing authorities on the community” all have the same screeching moralistic values as Jack Thompson?

TL;DR: progressivism never took root in geek culture because 4chan never saw itself as bullied nerds but as temporarily embarrassed jocks

Hitting the nail on the fucking head right here. They don’t want “their stuff” treated on the same level as “normie” hobbies, they wanted to be treated as special and above other interests, as if enjoying card games and RPGs made you better than liking sports and socializing.

considering the average american, liking niche things instead of mainstream things has a decent shot of making you better than the very low bar, but you still have to slay the brainworms society imparts upon you, and the reactionary nerds absolutely did not do that.

Also this shit reminds me of when channers write off a game or an anime as being lost to trans ppl forever because they saw one person with an enby flag in their pfp post fanart for it lmao

These people are such posers. The complete opposite happened with Warhammer, as an example.

Initial game is made by a bunch of British punks, including several women like Trish Morrison -> game gets popular and attracts a more mainstream audience -> OG punks move on to other projects because things got too corporate-> chuds start playing because they think the parts dunking on them are for them -> corporation starts pandering more to the chuds -> initial parody of reactionaries wears off and the settings are played seriously

It was a hobby by a bunch of Skinheads Against Racial Predjudice that hung out at gay bars and got in fights with Nazi skinheads. It never belonged to the reactionaries, they’re tourists.

Chuds are incapable of understanding how the profit motive and capitalist incentives ruin things, and so they are forced to create their own ridiculous reasons for things getting worse. This is how they end up thinking that Disney is woke and committing white genocide.

Disregarding the terrible analogy, if you stop enjoying a hobby just because other people join in, you never cared about the hobby either. You’re as much of a feckless pretender as they are. Though the whole idea of weeding out pretenders is entirely silly as well.
