Those who were around in the early days of the news megathread may remember Pedro Castillo, the left-leaning leader of Peru who was deposed in December 2022. He was replaced by Dina Boluarte, the first woman to be President of Peru, who described herself as a progressive but afterwards routinely sided with Peruvian conservatives and American interests. To say she was unpopular is an understatement of titanic proportions - she descended to such lows that she was, at one point, the single most unpopular leader on the planet. As with most deeply unpopular leaders that side with the West, she kept power for a bafflingly long time.
However, on October 10th, after a period of protests against the government, she was impeached and removed by Peru’s Congress in a unanimous vote. José Jerí was sworn in as the new President, who was previously the President of the Congress and is a member of a centrist Peruvian party. The government is trying the classic strategy: keep doing the same thing as before, and sacrifice an unpopular figure - here, Boluarte - in the hopes that this appeases the crowd.
Is this strategy working? It doesn’t really seem to be - protests are not only continuing, but strengthening, as it is clear that neoliberalism will not reformed and the brutality by police will not stop (there was very recently a high-profile case in which a musician, Mauricio Ruiz, was murdered). Controversies surrounding Jerí, including allegations of SA, are already being reported. If Jerí is deposed, the next person in line to try their hand at ruling will be the former army general Roberto Chiabra, who would be the ninth President in less than a decade.

Moon of Alabama, which tends to have interesting analysis. Avoid the comment section.
Understanding War and the Saker: reactionary sources that have occasional insights on the war.
Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are relatively brainworm-free and good if you don’t want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. He also co-hosts The Duran, which is more explicitly conservative, racist, sexist, transphobic, anti-communist, etc when guests are invited on, but is just about tolerable when it’s just the two of them if you want a little more analysis.
Simplicius, who publishes on Substack. Like others, his political analysis should be soundly ignored, but his knowledge of weaponry and military strategy is generally quite good.

Argentinian midterms results:
Congress (92% of the votes)
La Libertad Avanza (milei): 40%
Fuerza Patria (Peronism and others): 31%
Provincias Unidas (Remnants of the old UCR party and other local parties): 7%
Frente de Izquierda Unidad (Trots): 5%
Senate (90% of the votes)
La Libertad Avanza (milei): 42%
Fuerza Patria (Peronism and others): 28%
Provincias Unidas (Remnants of the old UCR party and other local parties): 13%
Frente de Izquierda Unidad (Trots): 4%
Somehow milei was able to overturn his pretty terrible defeat in the Buenos Aires province EVEN THOUGH his candidate had to drop out due to links with drug smugglers. They hold a 1% lead over the peronist coalition.
Participation was around 60%, the lowest since 1983.
Insane that the guy who crashed the economy that he runs by consulting his dead dog via séance is winning the fucking elections, and his only opposition appears to be fellow neolibs/fash? Fuck me
A depressing result. Possible that the low turnout relates to people feeling defeated by austerity and just not bothering to participate?
In my opinion, we should not rule out the possibility that the Milei regime simply rigged the elections. It’s very odd result, with the Argentinian economy in terminal decline and the debts rising…
No rigging took place, despite it’s many flaws our electoral system is quite robust and democratic (politically speaking), even more democratic than the US one for example (which is not a lot to say).
What happens is that there’s a sense among people that they would rather suffer tremendous hardships before getting governed by peronists once again. It’s insane, completely uncharted territory, but we’re here.
So in the minds of the people there really is no serious opposition?
Yes. Basically, Argentina today is capitalist realism at its most distilled.
how are the trots doing? obviously not good electoral results but theoretically they should be putting much more of their efforts into building dual power, they making any headway on that or…?
Electorally speaking they have been doing relatively well, all things considered. They do not have any major backings, so funding comes from their own militancy. They’re also a far-left party striving to survive in the post-USSR era, so you can imagine how hard it is to get a message rolling and get people to vote and do militancy for you. Yet despite all that they managed to build some actual political power, as of right now they hold three seats in Congress, they lost two over the years unfortunately. In some provinces they hold a couple of seats at a legislative level too.
Apart from electoralism they do invest a lot of time and energy in accompanying workers with their demands, and has provided material support during critical strikes. Some of their members come from worker-operated companies and factories, and pretty much everyone in their ranks are from a working class background. They do have some presence in some unions too, but they are far from taking power in the biggest ones yet, let alone the central union, the CGT. But that power is slowly building. A lot of people are completely unaware of this though, especially their opposition, who think the trots are just “another electoral party”.
They do have a quite charismatic and somewhat popular leader in Myriam Bregman, she’s well respected even among peronists, especially progressive and feminist peronism.
Is it just a bunch of chuds being anti peronist, or do that have valid reasons for that attitude?

Absolute joke of a country at this point.
