The censorship is done most at the market level in Japan. If you get published by one of the big magazines you get assigned a producer who is basically going to manage the story from start to finish on top of the filter that’s already deciding who gets picked for that in the first place.

So is Chinese censorship, it’s the publishers and copy rights holders that decide wether a series is cancelled or not.

Technically so is stormfront but we knot it tows the state department line.

It ultimately does not matter if the censorship is market based or if there is a commissar telling you what to do like in Disney, or if the authors have the boot all the way down their throats they can’t even begin to think of anything subversive. All are forms of media control.

In the end, there is much more diversity of both subversive thoughts and unsavory things in Chinese media. Partly it’s because they are more literate so they produce more slop, but mostly they have less censorship be it self imposed, at the market level or by the state.
