next 5 year plan calls for Mihoyo to remove all female cleavage from Genshin, while doubling the number of boys with animal ears and exposed tummy costumes.

    • I always wondered what the ‘censorship’ meant in China if Hoyoverse and now, Kuro Games can get away with their games, but to be fair, I don’t think there are… much, to write home about in terms of actually explicit stuff, more just… subtle and not-so-subtle ways (I swear why are there two women in Nod-Krai now who are… large-breasted? )

true fact the chinese version of dragon maid gave the women more realistic chest sizes and all the characters look a lot better for it

idk if they got rid of the libertarian stuff i never checked

    • Dragon Maid could be so much better without the sexualization. I love the base idea of found family, the contradictions that have to be resolved between the mundane and the fantastical, etc. But it is not to be :/

Are we going to say that the guy having a literal harem of waifus with highly sexualized designs wasn’t for misogynistic male-gaze/male sexual fantasy purposes and instead was the totally authentic expression of personal sexual agency of the three fictional women in a totally egalitarian polycule? Why’s is almost always polygyny, anyway?

I’ll be the first to admit that the interpersonal dynamic between wives and husband here is less bad than in many harems, but that’s a really low bar and there’s still a clear pecking order, and again also the male gaze thing. Honestly, it’s an issue where I don’t think you could even rewrite their lines to fix without just remaking part of the anime.

because straight men are looking for water in a desert and tend to have minimal prospects or options, while straight women are bombarded with a deluge of toxic waste looking for something safe.

there is some “reverse-harem” but it’s probably cuckold stuff more often than the woman as the POV character.

It was a rhetorical question and the answer was: Because these are all male sexual fantasies that have a subtextual interest in treating women as livestock that worships you, and there is no symmetry in these fantasies between men and women where polyandry (or a more gender-equal polycule) could even be conceivable.

There are totally “reverse-harem” examples, but they are almost all targeting a female audience and, while I think those deserve criticism too, I think it’s not quite as bad or objectifying, it rarely has the same subtext of ownership except as a gag. I agree that male-targeted straight polyandry is going to just be cuckoldry fetish stuff most of the time even in the rare case it appears at all.

okay but like donghua is unironically better than anime. Lord of Mysteries, To Be Hero X and Link Click are really good. I saw someone say that as soon as China finds out how to not keep re-animating Romance of the Three Kingdoms they’re going to take over Japan’s soft power. Seems like they’re starting to

If Chinese animators were brave enough to write more stories set in the modern era (which is partially because they are afraid of triggering Chinese censors) it would not only be likely more popular with the rest of the world but can also be used to promote socialist ideas abroad.

Is this thing for real? In my experience while censorship In Chinese media has been getting worse since the souland guy threw a tantrum, it’s still much less than in Japanese or american media. Chinese authors and anime get away with so much shit that wouldn’t even get published in the west.

Here in Mexico we have something called “libro vaquero” they are extremely misogynistic and male coded erotic comic books about cowboys, and you would see your grandpa reading them, a lot of Chinese web novels remind me of that type of literature, and from what I hear you can also see grandpa reading them In public. While japanese anime seems more aimed to kids and young adults and thus more censored.

China does seem to have a record of reducing the booba waifu content of imported anime, but my guess is that it’s specifically part of rules for what gets broadcast on certain TV stations at certain times of day rather than some kind of blanket ban on all erotic media everywhere.

On the other hand I have seen the opposite, were the boba wifus in the English translated Chinese comic strip get censored but in the original or the Russian or Spanish version they don’t.

So I think you are right that if there is censorship it probably has to do with broadcasting times.

Kind of, yeah. I’m not big into donghua but you can look it up on google and check out images. use this search term 漂亮的女主角动画 which roughly translates to “beautiful female protagonist donghua” to get an idea of

i do watch a lot of cdramas especially the costume dramas. i will say they are VERY conservative in what they show. never any tongue kissing. no sex scenes at all. no cleavage. a gay relationship can be implied but never featured. they are even super skiddish about showing a sexual relationship outside of marriage and if they do the people are pretty much already engaged formally anyways. all that said there are some great romances in some of these shows but its a lot of lustful gazing and longing like 30 episodes to get to a kiss sometimes kinda shit.

as a matter of fact this show (which my wife and i didnt care for) showed the most risque scene we’ve seen in a costume drama yet and by western standards its practically pg. https://youtu.be/OVN1y6LPWD4?t=1614 (timestamped on the scene its actually sfw its so tame)

The censorship is done most at the market level in Japan. If you get published by one of the big magazines you get assigned a producer who is basically going to manage the story from start to finish on top of the filter that’s already deciding who gets picked for that in the first place.

So is Chinese censorship, it’s the publishers and copy rights holders that decide wether a series is cancelled or not.

Technically so is stormfront but we knot it tows the state department line.

It ultimately does not matter if the censorship is market based or if there is a commissar telling you what to do like in Disney, or if the authors have the boot all the way down their throats they can’t even begin to think of anything subversive. All are forms of media control.

In the end, there is much more diversity of both subversive thoughts and unsavory things in Chinese media. Partly it’s because they are more literate so they produce more slop, but mostly they have less censorship be it self imposed, at the market level or by the state.

  • Why do westerners need horny in every piece of media they consume? They act as if porn is an illicit, super rare commodity. They’ll rage about booba not being humongous in vidya and have a wallpaper or pfp of a 16 year old anime character with monster tits. Why?

I have a problem with chinese-to-english translations for Manhua (Donghua is perfectly fine), so many of them are sexualised that it’s impossible to read, and because most translated Manhua are sexualised I can’t even really find the good ones

I enjoyed a few, but there is so much to get through to find them, and I can’t even filter them because they’re not tagged with Ecchi or 18+ or something, at some point I just began wishing china allowed for more nsfw content so that these sexualised Manhua would be eliminated all together
