it’s false, it’s always been false, we’ve known it’s been false, that “liberal” democracy promotes crime. it’s it fact orders of magnitude more exacting on criminality than previous systems. but the enduring neofascist/neolib (depending on when/where) narrative of ‘liberalism’ begetting greater crime is tacitly accepted by FNV writers.
arguably, the NCR/Legion dynamic could be explained by overestension on the part of the NCR, but the way Cas talks about it seems like it’s not localized to the Mojave. So I think the writers actually bought into big government = ineffiency = unopposed criminals paradigm, when realistically any “totalitarian” accord the Legion enforced (with their level of technology) surely involved great accomidation and incorporation of ‘criminal’ elements–highwaymen became toll road men
