Starting February 2026, Microsoft Authenticator will block Entra credentials on jailbroken/rooted iOS and Android devices through a phased rollout: warning, blocking, then wiping credentials. This security feature requires no admin setup. Users on compliant devices remain unaffected. Organizations should notify users and update documentation accordingly.

I really think we need a :microsoft-cool: emoji

Ive heard that there are some very good authenticator applications on f-droid or izzyondroid, but yeah it’s hard for me to conjure the energy to do anything to switch until something really inconvenient happens

I know it weakens its purpose but personally cba to grab my phone / open another app every time I want to log into something. It automatically copies the 2fa code to the clipboard too after having it fill in the password which is very convenient.

In my mind it’s ok because much of the utility of TOTP is to mitigate for people reusing the same password on multiple sites.

But there are other threats like someone accessing your device that might be mitigated with TOTP but aren’t when the TOTP is in the password manager.

Not sure myself, but it does seem to be part of a much broader trend of them completely locking down their environments and not allowing any alternatives to themselves.

I’ve had an iPhone for four years for a couple reasons that aren’t really relevant but I was looking forward to getting an android device again in a year or so, rooting it, and taking control of my phone again. It looks as though google is going the way of Apple wrt locking down phones. I guess I’ll be sticking with Tim Apple for a bit longer.

There are linux smartphones, like the Pinephone for example. However, they’re a very niche market, and don’t have a lot of native apps (or developer support for said apps). So, their uses are pretty limited. I bought a pinephone a few years back and it never really worked properly - I found out that you had to flash the modem firmware (?) and I ran into a bunch of errors trying to do that. Plus half the time the fuckin thing wouldn’t come out of sleep mode lol. So I just bought an old skool flip phone instead, it works like a charm.

Ive looked into Linux phones every once in a while. Theyre still too experimental for me to be an adopter. I need them to be to the point where I can go to the ATT store or the Verizon store and pick up a Linux phone. That level of adoption. The current stuff is sorta underwhelming too. And I dont need a phone thats cutting edge. But it just sorta seems like every linux phone is a compromise of some sort. Some are lacking storage. Some are lacking a decent camera. Some are lacking application support. Some are lacking decent data transmission speed b/c all they can get are garbage cell modems. Whatever it is, some combination of stuff like that keeps me off a linux phone for now. I need a phone for work with all the things, more or less. I do use linux too, which I guess it makes it odd to complain about linux on a phone. And I also understand that those things im bellyaching about wont get better until more people adopt it so I need to buy it, but I just cant.

Anyway thanks for coming to phonetalk

I hate the future of having to carry 3 smartphones around.

    1. One for personal use with a good OS
    2. one for work
    3. one for banking, goverment ID, etc. but ironically also some of the most cursed malware adjacent apps pre-installed and impossible to remove without rooting the phone.

For what it’s worth I’ve seen more “trying Linux for the first time!” posts than ever before on account of Win10 support ending.

I see multiple of them every day now in my feeds.
