  • Finished GTAV yesterday. It was OK I guess. I haven’t played a GTA game since like 2009 probably. Since it’s a big-budget game it of course has anything it could do shaved down to being as big and bland as possible but the graphical fidelity, detail of the city, and stuff were pretty atmospheric and nice. It’s superficially really convincing, especially if you’re cruising through the city but actually going around you start seeing people acting weird and it’s all superficial. YOu’d think they’d emphasize the immersive-sim qualities they’ve been cultivating with the world/people/car simulations and the increasing number of tools you have but all you can do, really, is just blow up cars, cause traffic accidents, get the police after you. There’s stuff you can do with this but it’s not as much as it could be. It has the multi-part heist missions which again almost approach being a sizeable game mechanic but stops short for whatever reasons. You have some options how you do them and who you have on the crew, some of which you can find in the overworld as you play, but they’re still kinda’ linear and the game does that dynamic-difficulty thing where it’s clearly just trying to string you along action set pieces without you dying too much or having to make hard decisions. And considering how much of the game is either driving or shooting, it’s way too easy to get good cars and good weapons early on to make the missions even easier. They should have dragged the poor part out more. I guess the other thing it’s going for is like being an RPG-ish life-sim where you’re encouraged to just do sidequests as a character you’ve molded which I could see getting into, maybe with self-imposed challenges like breaking as few laws as possible, but since the game’s mechanically so boring to play doesn’t interest me as much as it could. Also, the satire just isn’t good. It almost always both-sides issues. It’s just offensive at times, I don’t mind the jokey offensive brand names and stuff since they’re just puns but the radio ads and stuff aren’t clever. And the 3 characters are whatever, I don’t like or find them as interesting as past GTA games. Michael especially is fucking awful to deal with, just a void of anything interesting. Trevor is kinda’ charming since he clearly turns on his charisma to manipulate people and is like a mentally unstable hipster with various psychoses driving his weirdness. Franklin’s sympathetic but is basically the same character at the start and the end, where events happen around him since the story is really Trevor and Michael’s and Franklin’s just there as like a CJ call-back and partially-tokenized black representative.

Returning to LSD: Dream Emulator and progressing in that too. Gunna’ finish that and then I think I’m gunna’ finally return to Elden Ring and finish that. And then move on to some new stuff finally. Maybe finish reading the Rewrite visual novel.
