Of course it calls itself “anti-war” but this is what the promo shots look like:

actors playing nazis

The trailer makes it look like a typical war movie. But the protagonists are German soldiers. I’m sure there will be a scene or two that show they’re meanies.

Ugh, and I usually like Eastern Front stuff. Though generally, the Soviet made or Russian made ones are the only decent Eastern Front stuff. The difference between a WWII movie and a Great Patriotic War movie, y’know? Like, I’m not generally a fan of war movies, but… my dad and I rarely get along on anything. One of the few things we can agree on is WWII movies. We both like dead Nazis, and he doesn’t really care who exactly is killing Nazis as long as there’s enough gore and explosions, and sometimes I just like seeing the Soviet Red Army as good guys in a binary good vs. evil storyline, and generally that’s really bloody hard to find in mainstream media (though I also don’t care a great deal who’s killing Nazis as long as there’s Nazis exploding). So one of the few things we’ll sit down and watch together, without arguing about the Cold War, is a WWII movie, or a Great Patriotic War movie.

So, yeah. Usually I like Eastern Front war movies, it means I get to see the Soviets portrayed positively. The idea of something that’s the exact opposite… just. So much “ugh” for me specifically, that goes beyond ideological “fuck Nazis” and into personal “this is ruining a thing I like and enjoy sharing with a person I otherwise struggle to maintain a positive relationship with”.

Just pushing the clean Wehrmacht myth. I wouldn’t be surprised if next they create a drama about an IDF soldier who has PTSD from committing warcrimes, and pass him off as a victim of his governments policies.

Edit: just rewatched the trailer. The protagonists are all wearing deathshead badges. What is this? Clean SS myth? ffs.

I’m kind of surprised that we don’t already have an updated IDF movie like that, but it’s probably been in the works since the advanced notice that Israel got from Egypt about October 7th.

I’m imagining good Aryan boys and IDF “angels,” accompanied by token Misrahi Jews and a reformed Muslim Palestinian who just can’t continence the horrors of Hamas (perhaps he’s gay and has witnessed beheadings and totally real roof-tossings).

They witness a lurid depiction of what Zios say happened on October 7th, and go on to battle the “Islamonazi” hordes. Somewhere along the way, the Palestinian gets shot by the Islamonazis as a symbol for how Hamas oppresses “their own people,” but he manages to hold on in critical condition.

It turns out that a massive operation to pull off a 2nd October 7th is being coordinated under a hospital, and a brave IDF angel is forced to rocket it from her plane, but in a highly targeted manner so it’s okay. Unfortunately, Hamas was keeping a bunch of explosives in/under the hospital and much more of it was blown up than planned.

Queue wall-to-wall media coverage by the ignorant and privileged western press about supposed war crimes by the IDF, immediately threatening to cause Israel to be sanctioned by radical leftist communist (((cultural marxists))) and college kids whose protests are sponsored by Iran and Qatar, who demand Jewish blood and are attacking Jewish students and making them wear stars or something. There’s lurid footage of a hate crime being committed, where the perpetrators say “From the river to the sea, free Palestine.”

This is a profound trauma for our brave troops, whose social media is flooded with antisemitism, but with patient and wise hasbara, as well as demonstrations of their triumphs over Islamonazis who are trying to kill gay people, the IDF is able to make the comment sections bloom. Hamas’s grip on Gaza is finally broken, and the surviving Palestinian soldier thanks his Jewish comrades for liberating Palestinians, while the westerners thank them for saving the world.

A threat still looms over the horizon, because Hamas was just one tentacle of Iran and the other tentacles of the Dar al-Islam still remain, but for today, they can rest in the sunlight knowing that they freed Palestine.

More likely, they’ll have a scene showing how our main characters disapprove of the overall goals of the nazis, but are just “good soldiers” “fighting for their country.”

If you think about it, they aren’t even trying to teach proactive pro-Nazism. Just convince people that going along with it doesn’t require you to be a Nazi, so they’ll go along as their society nazifies while they tuy-tut away, like the good guys in the Wehrmacht.

Yep. That was always the goal of the “clean Wermacht” myth. That as long as you disapprove of murdering innocent babies, you can murder all the innocent babies in the world, as long as you are just following orders.

Looks like this movie is getting a theatrical run in Germany. I wonder what that means…

Let’s be real, if this movie was going to be true to life, the tank would break down a kilometre down the road from the depot. If it did, in fact, make it further than that, it would’ve been taken out the second it left the frontlines, because it’s a stupid thing to bring on a “secret mission”

Stalingrad is a German film and was completely unapologetic towards Germany during WWII. The Wehrmacht soldiers commit war crimes with no remorse. They claim they’re on a mission blessed by God. They pledge their loyalty to Hitler. They excitedly talk about killing all Russians to make way for German farmers. Then they all end up surrounded with no supplies or food, freezing to death as the Soviets hunt them down.

Hopefully this newer film will be like that and not the godawful shit that was Generation War.

I dunno because I gave up after an episode and a half. The series starts right off the bat with clean Wehrmacht shit. One of the friends of the group of Germans the stories centers around is Jewish. During the time the series takes place, Jews were either hidden like Anne Frank’s family or they were given over to the authorities. The group would either have to hide their friend or (more likely) would have turned him in.

The series tries to present the Holocaust as something only carried out by German high command and the SS. The reality was the entire country actively participated. There was no way you could not know because nearly every town had a concentration camp or a ghetto. Furthermore, the majority of undesirables were turned in by their friends and neighbors to local police. The SS didn’t go searching door-to-door looking for hidden compartments. They relied on the antisemitism of everyday Germans to hunt people down.

Generation War downplays all this. The characters don’t know Jews are being carried off to their deaths. They don’t display any antisemitism. They’re just some good ol’ wholesome Germans that were victims of a war that magically appeared out of nowhere.

It’s like if you made a story about the antebellum South where the main characters have a black friend who is free, don’t know slavery is a thing, somehow end up fighting for the Confederacy, and then they’re portrayed as being the majority of Southerners.

Edit: just realized you meant Stalingrad lmao. In Stalingrad, the Germans take a Russian girl hostage and abuse her in various ways. I forget if they shot her or someone else did. I know she dies towards the end.

Yeah that sounds very much revisionist. I can imagine some people coped themselves into thinking jewish people got deported to palestine or not knowing HOW jewish people got killed, but similarly to the “kids in cages” debacle, most people aware enough knew that it surely isnt going to be pretty where the jewish citizens were taken.

          Yeah

          spoiler

It’s not that she is a collaborator, she’s a prisoner tied to a bed held by German officers and they untie her and she’s going to lead them out. They get spotted from hundreds of meters away and she is cut down by a machine-gun.

It’s one of the themes of the film that the people they try to help - the young woman, and the little boy Kolya, all get killed by the war.

Nazi tanks would impressively scale a hill while on camera and once filming was finished they’d reattach the donkeys to drag it to the battlefield just so it could get blown up by a T-34 before firing a single shot

I’m sure there will be a scene or two that show they’re meanies.

It sounds like the kind of movie where the smol bean Wehrmacht are shocked and dismayed at the evils of the SS because the Wehrmacht was just so dedicated to fighting a good clean war and honorably defending(?) their nation that they didn’t notice what else was happening until it was too late.

If this movie is about anything other than fragging and/or defecting, the creators are miserable fascists.

It could be about them being demonically evil and suffering rightfully for their crimes at the hands of the USSR or even the Americans. But I’m not optimistic.

I mean they could have easily made a movie about german defectors to the greek resistance or the soviet army. Instead of we were just following orders movie nr. 2732323 - if they wanted to make a movie from a german POV. Like there are so many of them and almost all from the same perspectives.
