Being allowed to watch R rated movies at a super young age was one of the first times I noticed my parents were a bit more chill than other kid’s. They weren’t letting me watch this stuff cause they didnt care, they were letting me cause I was ready for it earlier than a lot of kids and cause I had an interest in film making as long as I can remember and had a big book of how various special effects were done (pre cgi days when that was interesting), so I wanted to check out this Tom Savini guy’s work and knew and had an interest in how to fake blood and gore. I was the first person in my family ever to have artistic aptitude and interest and they made DAMN sure that was being enriched. Otherwise, they just had no problem letting me do more or less whatever I wanted cause it was generally reading, drawing, movies or vidya and later skateboarding and punk music. They called the school and got me out of classes so I could go on tour when I was 17. I think they’d also figured out pretty quick that if they forbid me from doing something that I felt was perfectly reasonable id just do it anyway, I think their approach was to allow the small things so I didnt feel like i needed to act out.

My mom was a land of contrasts. She could sell drugs all day around me but letting me watch Ninja Turtles was unacceptable because violence. My dad is the based one. First time he found out I was smoking weed at like 14 he taught me to roll joints.

My parents were much more square but once they figured out I was smoking weed they said 'We arent at all surprised. Just use the garage.". They also didnt really stop me from.warxhing anything but would ridicule anything they thought was ‘stupid’ and sometimes they were right like Family Guy and just as often they were wrong like The Simpsons. They never gave the show a chance cause bartmania put them off cause they thought it was a show about a kid being shitty. Despite that my dad loves Calvin and Hobbes which is largely about a kid being shitty. They write shit off. My dad has since moved on the Simpsons but my mom still thinks its dumb despite having watched Two and a Half Men as it aired all the way through. Ive basically got a Hank and Peggy Hill except socdems

For my parents it was specifically Bart being rude to his father that they took issue with; I don’t think Calvin and Hobbs would’ve been an issue (provided he wasn’t rude to either parent)
