I have zero tolerance for the fascist longing for an imaginary 1950s that didn’t exist but at least it feels far enough away and there’s a lack of media of ordinary life that you can make it into kind of fantasy themepark of nostalgia. “Never be housebroken” is just like “you’ll never be clean/acceptable/part of polite society” and I think the cigarette one means something like “you shouldn’t be able to slide a piece of paper between the two parties on the topic of immigration” but I’m not sure.
