“we need to update the rules with tech trees and fog-of-war”
Apparently polytopia isn’t even particularly interesting as a civ game or RTS or whatever it is.
It’s fine to play on the toilet at work but Musk acting like it’s the true Game of Kings shows what a bazinga brain he is lmao
Apparently he would always lose to Grimes so is she the reincarnation of Hannibal or something
That’s just Pathfinder 1e
I’m actually very pro this.
Then people will hopefully stop playing d&d and start playing other systems.
What’s the “Bluesky” of D&D?
Edit: Or Mastodon, etc.
Pathfinder?
looks at my Pathfinder stuff
thinks about it
Fuck :pain:
At least Paizo treats Trans people with respect and let their workers unionize
Also Pathfinder is just a better sword-and-board system
That it is
That and playing as a magic umbrella that came to life is just fun
All i know about pathfinder is that apparently the first edition had a lot of kink stuff in it, and some very explicit bestiality stuff. I don’t even know if its true, a friend who is into tabletop stuff told me.
Early PF was a spinoff of 3.5 and the thing about 3.5 was they were letting fucking anyone write books for it which PF inherited. I don’t know if it’s explicitly any freakier than 3.5 having books on which species could interbreed and what different species breast milk tasted like
The worst you can say about early Pathfinder is that they really wanted to stand out from D&D, so everything was just maximalized
Ogres weren’t just maneaters, they were also incestuous sex predators
There’s not just one evil nation of slavers, but several and slavery is even in some of the “good” nations
Goblins weren’t just nasty little level one fodder, they were violent little firestarters
I don’t know where beastiality comes in, unless they’re just upset that they had catfolk, gnolls, and ratfolk stuff in there
Pretty sure it was Lamashtu who had the bestiality stuff, they drew heavily on the source material when designing her.
That’s uncalled for, Pathfinder actually takes some critical thinking skills.
Pathfinder is the fedi of D&D.
Pathfinder is too cool to be Bluesky (as a business model, I’ve never played).
It should be Draw Steel or one of those other new ones.
Maybe Daggerheart?
100% it’s Daggerheart.
Yeah that’s the one I’m thinking of.
D&D but you feel a slight guilty twinge when subscribing to dndbeyond
dndbeyond
The blue checkmark of DnD
Recreating Disco Elysium’s system
Rolling 2d6 for every single check
The DM is getting lazy. Wealthy racist villian plotting to own the realms is so overused. Especially when a low level rogue can easily one shot them.
It’s usually been an artificer who does it
11/28/24
Well, if he hasn’t bought it by now, maybe he just forgot about it…?
Keep feeding him ketamine. He can’t buy DnD if he keeps having to changed his soiled pants.
What if he balances his ketamine diarrhea with opiates constipation?
Don’t give him ideas now!
Counterpoint: he might die
I hadn’t even considered
Eh even if this does go through idgaf. Dnd (and other pen&paper RPGs) are so player driven it doesn’t really matter who owns it. Don’t like the current edition? There’s like 5 - 7 editions of dnd depending how you count them, a few pathfinder editions, and countless other role playing games out there, take your pick and find a group.
Hell, maybe it would kick off a renaissance if people didn’t default to dnd as The role playing game. I’d love to get a Shadowrun game together some day…
I haven’t read or with 6e at all, any idea how it is compared to 5e?
No idea, I haven’t kept up with any dnd announcements since the first couple sourcebooks for 5e. If anything I’d be more interested in 3.5 or pathfinder if I can find a group but people seem the most willing to play 5e so that’s what I’ve been rolling with when I have a chance to play
I meant Shadowrun 6e, sorry for the confusion!
Oh my b lol, my answer is still very similar, I haven’t kept up with new editions since 5e/4e anniversary so I don’t know anything about 6e. I’m most familiar with 4e & 5e but it’s been years since I even glanced at the rules, without a group to play with I end up reading the fluff/lore more
Shadowrun is so fucking cool
It is, I had a couple short lived games in highschool when I was the Designated GM and used the fact no one else wanted to run the games to force my group to branch out (especially since this was during 4e and I got tired of that real fast) but I haven’t managed to find anyone interested since. Shadowrun Returns/Dragonfall/Hong Kong scratch the itch a little but it’s like comparing playing Balders Gate to actually playing Dnd with your friends.
The combination of magic and cyberpunk is so fucking cool I don’t know how more people aren’t grabbed by it. Who doesn’t want to play a game where you’re slinging fireballs at cop cars while your chummers are freeing awakened critters from a corporate black site?
timestamp. this was a particularly ridiculous claim he made, but it’s nine months later so I doubt it’s actually happening
He’ll kill the already shaky popularity of a frankly terribly-designed ttrpg and he’ll poison the well on other brands wanting to sign on to Universes Beyond. Overall, it could be much worse, even though the damage that he will do waifuizing and AI-ifying MTG is going to be miserable.
I stopped playing D&D 2 years ago and switched to other systems (GURPS), and I stopped playing Magic a decade ago. If he wants to buy a dumpster fire, I say let him.
I have a reflexive sympathy for MTG because they have some fun art and such, but it seems like they don’t want to do that anymore and are just doing fortnite metaverse slop for the majority of releases lately, so I guess we sadly aren’t losing that much.
Pathfinder continues to remain the superior system. Especially considering the majority of content is already available to the masses.
I haven’t played Pathfinder 2e, but from what I’ve read if you want something like D&D but deeper and with rules that work, it’s the superior choice. If you want shallow but still somehow complex, D&D is an okay pick. Some people legitimately do like that D&D 5e just has some initial weirdness to learn, and then you can coast on “I move and attack” for the rest of your career.
Personally, I prefer Fate for a light weight game. It’s also free. https://fate-srd.com/fate-core
I brought a 5e-only player and 2 5e-over-PF players in for my current PF2e campaign and quickly converted them completely, because while 5e is, as you say, shallow but somehow complex, PF2e is deep but somehow simple. Three action economy, save and skill DCs, degrees of success - they’re simple and easy to remember and use, so you can still make a move-attack-raise shield character, but it’s just as easy (and worthwhile) to do more complex things like combat manoeuvres and spellcasting as they use the same mechanics.
I honestly think most 5e players would much prefer to play PF2e but are scared away by the percieved complexity and choices, and could be quickly convinced with a few sessions of play. I onboarded all my players with a couple of the free RPG day oneshots.
Why do you need Hasbro to play D&D?
There was some bullshit about the licensing. I forget what it was, but it’s a string to be pulled in the cultural web
Licensing
Yeah, that’ll definitely save his plummeting popularity.
It certainly won’t inspire yet another mass exodus from a game that is already fledgling from company mismanagement.
Join us at the pathfinder table comrade. It comes for us all
Or go crustier and join us OSR-folk
Looking forward to Grok designed Magic cards and more anime booba on every female character 🙃
Pretty sure wizards of the coast has already been found to have accepted AI art
Also Magic has been a little trash for a while now. Spiderman as a summonable monster?
It’s Fortnite the card game now. Nice Spiderman, I’m gonna counter it with my SpongeBob Counterspell, equip the Buster Sword to Aragorn, and power up a spaceship 😬
The UB stuff brings in so many more people to the game. A bunch of people who got in just for final fantasy are still showing up at my lgs every week. I hated it too but it’s really hard to argue against after seeing all the new people become regular players because of it. It is doing more for the game than just print more money, even if that’s the only reason Hasbro is doing it.
Would I prefer no UB to what we have now? Yes, almost certainly, but it’s not all bad. I’m enjoying the larger community at my lgs and I’m just going to ignore the sets I’m not into.
Ya they’re still doing normal sets at least, too, right?
They are, but some people think that the return to lorwyn set was pushed out of this year because of avatar, which sucks. So if that’s true UB is already impacting the number of in universe sets. Hopefully they stick with the current mix of UB and in universe.
Oh I lov d Llorwyn when it first came out. That’s cool that they’re coming back to it.
you can’t ignore sets when the cards are in type 2 or 1.5 or EDH, or whatever nonsense formats they’ve created in the last decade.
the fortnitification of everything is horrible. greedy fucks should believe in their fucking identity
That’s true. You really can’t just ignore them because some of them have potentially huge game breaking cards in some formats.
I’ve talked to a lot of people who said they were curious about magic for a while and the x ip was the thing that finally pushed them off the fence. There are people who came in for lotr still playing the game and that’s the thing I saw that finally got me to give up most of the hate.
i hate funko pops and if funko pops got people into one of my hobbies i’d struggle to find common ground with them and i’d still hate funko pops
i quit playing a while back after years and years of system and vision changes away from what i liked about magic. We need some communist card games made by people who have read and understood Baudrillard.
I understand the point you were going for with Funko pops, and I’m sure it wasn’t a real suggestion, but do you have similar feelings for things like final fantasy or avatar? Fandoms are cringe, but not everyone who feels more comfortable giving magic a try because it references things they are deeply familiar with is cringe. They also won’t all connect with you on a spiritual level either, but plenty are fine people.
I like the game. I think it’s great. Maybe the ultimate board/card game even. I like the magic universe as well, but it’s second to the game itself for me. Being able to compare it to something like Funko pops sucks with all the brand deals, but magic is still a great game to me and not just a cheap plastic simulacrum of someone’s beloved childhood IP.
I’ve accepted its a different game than a few years ago and that’s ok. Like you I skip the sets I don’t care much for and am more of an eternal player anyway these days. You can pry these (proxied) Moxes from my cold, dead hands!
Spiderman as a summonable monster?
Haven’t they seen Spiderverse? He’s clearly a planeswalker
Doctor Who Commander decks
You know, I can see them torn on this.
Anime booba might make them happy and own the imaginary strawman that didn’t actually exist during gamergate, but anime is made by scary brown people and not Red-Blooded All-AmericansTM. Also, booba might be too sexy and sex is an eeeevil invention of the debbil!
You are forgetting Musk being hugely into anime booba. It’s going to be an extremely prominent element if he buys them out.
The one good thing I can see coming from this is that people stop referring to the genre of ttrpg as D&D.
Yeah but then all TTRPG will get associated with Nazis
Could be worse, he could want to resurrect RAHOWA
GURPS stays winning
Much as I enjoy GURPS, IIRC Steve Jackson is a libertarian so it’s hardly much to brag about.
Ooof. Did not know that
New rules!
Only one race can be used by players: Aryan.
Only male characters allowed.
Female characters can be rented at an inn to follow the main character, but aren’t playable.
🤮
More rules:
You HAVE to be Chaotic Evil
The story must follow the Haye’s code
You must play as a vampire
Your only stats will be strength and charisma. Intelligence is for losers.
No bards, sexy shenanigans might back Jesus sad
Never have fun, you might make Jesus sad.
The story must follow the Haye’s code
Except for the part with no sex, that part is inverted and now rest benefits outside of healing and fatigue recovery are only fulfilled by having sex, with twosomes giving the former benefits of short rests and harem orgies likewise corresponding to long rests.
