The DM is getting lazy. Wealthy racist villian plotting to own the realms is so overused. Especially when a low level rogue can easily one shot them. luigi-dance

Eh even if this does go through idgaf. Dnd (and other pen&paper RPGs) are so player driven it doesn’t really matter who owns it. Don’t like the current edition? There’s like 5 - 7 editions of dnd depending how you count them, a few pathfinder editions, and countless other role playing games out there, take your pick and find a group.

Hell, maybe it would kick off a renaissance if people didn’t default to dnd as The role playing game. I’d love to get a Shadowrun game together some day…

No idea, I haven’t kept up with any dnd announcements since the first couple sourcebooks for 5e. If anything I’d be more interested in 3.5 or pathfinder if I can find a group but people seem the most willing to play 5e so that’s what I’ve been rolling with when I have a chance to play

Oh my b lol, my answer is still very similar, I haven’t kept up with new editions since 5e/4e anniversary so I don’t know anything about 6e. I’m most familiar with 4e & 5e but it’s been years since I even glanced at the rules, without a group to play with I end up reading the fluff/lore more

It is, I had a couple short lived games in highschool when I was the Designated GM and used the fact no one else wanted to run the games to force my group to branch out (especially since this was during 4e and I got tired of that real fast) but I haven’t managed to find anyone interested since. Shadowrun Returns/Dragonfall/Hong Kong scratch the itch a little but it’s like comparing playing Balders Gate to actually playing Dnd with your friends.

The combination of magic and cyberpunk is so fucking cool I don’t know how more people aren’t grabbed by it. Who doesn’t want to play a game where you’re slinging fireballs at cop cars while your chummers are freeing awakened critters from a corporate black site?

He’ll kill the already shaky popularity of a frankly terribly-designed ttrpg and he’ll poison the well on other brands wanting to sign on to Universes Beyond. Overall, it could be much worse, even though the damage that he will do waifuizing and AI-ifying MTG is going to be miserable.

I stopped playing D&D 2 years ago and switched to other systems (GURPS), and I stopped playing Magic a decade ago. If he wants to buy a dumpster fire, I say let him.

I have a reflexive sympathy for MTG because they have some fun art and such, but it seems like they don’t want to do that anymore and are just doing fortnite metaverse slop for the majority of releases lately, so I guess we sadly aren’t losing that much.

I haven’t played Pathfinder 2e, but from what I’ve read if you want something like D&D but deeper and with rules that work, it’s the superior choice. If you want shallow but still somehow complex, D&D is an okay pick. Some people legitimately do like that D&D 5e just has some initial weirdness to learn, and then you can coast on “I move and attack” for the rest of your career.

Personally, I prefer Fate for a light weight game. It’s also free. https://fate-srd.com/fate-core

I brought a 5e-only player and 2 5e-over-PF players in for my current PF2e campaign and quickly converted them completely, because while 5e is, as you say, shallow but somehow complex, PF2e is deep but somehow simple. Three action economy, save and skill DCs, degrees of success - they’re simple and easy to remember and use, so you can still make a move-attack-raise shield character, but it’s just as easy (and worthwhile) to do more complex things like combat manoeuvres and spellcasting as they use the same mechanics.

I honestly think most 5e players would much prefer to play PF2e but are scared away by the percieved complexity and choices, and could be quickly convinced with a few sessions of play. I onboarded all my players with a couple of the free RPG day oneshots.

Yeah, that’ll definitely save his plummeting popularity.

It certainly won’t inspire yet another mass exodus from a game that is already fledgling from company mismanagement.

The UB stuff brings in so many more people to the game. A bunch of people who got in just for final fantasy are still showing up at my lgs every week. I hated it too but it’s really hard to argue against after seeing all the new people become regular players because of it. It is doing more for the game than just print more money, even if that’s the only reason Hasbro is doing it.

Would I prefer no UB to what we have now? Yes, almost certainly, but it’s not all bad. I’m enjoying the larger community at my lgs and I’m just going to ignore the sets I’m not into.

They are, but some people think that the return to lorwyn set was pushed out of this year because of avatar, which sucks. So if that’s true UB is already impacting the number of in universe sets. Hopefully they stick with the current mix of UB and in universe.

you can’t ignore sets when the cards are in type 2 or 1.5 or EDH, or whatever nonsense formats they’ve created in the last decade.

That’s true. You really can’t just ignore them because some of them have potentially huge game breaking cards in some formats.

I’ve talked to a lot of people who said they were curious about magic for a while and the x ip was the thing that finally pushed them off the fence. There are people who came in for lotr still playing the game and that’s the thing I saw that finally got me to give up most of the hate.

i hate funko pops and if funko pops got people into one of my hobbies i’d struggle to find common ground with them and i’d still hate funko pops shrug-outta-hecks

i quit playing a while back after years and years of system and vision changes away from what i liked about magic. We need some communist card games made by people who have read and understood Baudrillard.

I understand the point you were going for with Funko pops, and I’m sure it wasn’t a real suggestion, but do you have similar feelings for things like final fantasy or avatar? Fandoms are cringe, but not everyone who feels more comfortable giving magic a try because it references things they are deeply familiar with is cringe. They also won’t all connect with you on a spiritual level either, but plenty are fine people.

I like the game. I think it’s great. Maybe the ultimate board/card game even. I like the magic universe as well, but it’s second to the game itself for me. Being able to compare it to something like Funko pops sucks with all the brand deals, but magic is still a great game to me and not just a cheap plastic simulacrum of someone’s beloved childhood IP.

The story must follow the Haye’s code

Except for the part with no sex, that part is inverted and now rest benefits outside of healing and fatigue recovery are only fulfilled by having sex, with twosomes giving the former benefits of short rests and harem orgies likewise corresponding to long rests.
