Coworker: “I’m on a keto diet, I’ve been having 6 eggs for breakfast everyday”
Me: “Wow, that sounds taxing on your liver, maybe check your plan with a doctor nutritionist”
Coworker: “Yes, it was my gym nutritionist who designed the diet, I also do protein shakes”
These gym bros have convinced each other they need to be taking literally hundreds of grams of protein a day it’s fucking wild
At some point they decided that the ideal diet, regardless of your goals, is that of an 80’s bodybuilder but without the PEDs
And crucially, without the insane volume required to actually turn all that protein into muscle tissue. Bodybuilders literally spend most of their day at the gym because they need to be lifting constantly to make their nutrition be useful.
high protein diets may not be as harmful as commonly believed tho, at least according to this one review paper that came out this month ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
(https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0002916525002540)
tho if you ask me while there might be a case to be made for 3g/kg which is lowkey insane and entering straight unemployed min-max territory most people are gonna be just fine with anywhere between 1.8 to 2.2 g/kg which comes out to somewhere between 100-200g per day for most ppl, obviously in the context of resistance training not couch rotting
I’m not arguing about health risks of eating too much protein, but 1.8g - 2.2g/kg is just not based on anything though it’s bro science. NIH and FDA both recommendaround 0.8g/kg. People don’t get protein deficiency in the western world there just isn’t a justification for that, if anything people eat way more than is required to be healthy.
This is from an NIH meta analysis
It might be broscience but I struggled cutting weight for years until I actually counted my shit and aimed for 1.8g/kg protein. Then it was wholly manageable and I proceeded to lose 10+kg and I’m back on it burning a couple more. It was truly one of the rare times in life where it was like “Of course! I was missing… THE NUTRIENT!”
Were you cutting carbs at the same time?
I cut a lot of carbs, but it’s not fair to frame it as simply carbs. There’s also a lot of delicious fats that I stop partaking in for limited times of calorie restriction. So fried food, my beloved, has to wait.
true, though in lifting populations or people looking to “maximize gains”, theres some research on higher protein intakes being better for that goal, but like you said for most people it really doesnt matter much and they very likely dont need to be chugging protein all day
even in people who subscribe to the “maximizing gains” goal i think they tend to hyper analyze and lose the forest for the trees where theyd probably be better off not stressing about it as much and more productive reining in other variables instead
personally i just try to get as much as i can every day then go to sleep at the end of the day, its a peaceful life
I eat 3 eggs for breakfast every day and i’m pretty sure that is absolutely fucking nothing to my liver compared to all the alcohol
Maybe you should not drink alcohol either
My liver is a little wuss and I don’t drink nor had hepatitis, nor eat meat, nor smoke
Speaking of eggs it’s really cool how they made some noise about bird flu but only to the extent of “a dozen eggs are $9 now” and like it’s been months and months and eggs are still $9 a dozen. It’s hard to imagine the situation with bird flu is literally the exact same as it was then so with the price neither increasing or decreasing im gonna go out on a limb here and say I think the prices of our basic commodities are divorced from their actual production costs and supply and demand. Whoda thunk it
In my area, eggs are affordable again, Costco has them $4.49 for 2 dozen
well look at you bragging about living in elysium
Don’t mean to brag :( I just was surprised some regions still havent recovered.
If it helps you feel better, our rent is $2700 and I have been underemployed for 18 months
it has nothing to do with recovery, the supply was never seriously affected in a way that would affect the price, and the price movement did not follow the small decline in supply.
So its probably just Costco keeping them at a break even price to bring in customers (potential chumps) like me. I was just at trader joes and they were 3.99 a dozen, which is still a bit high in my opinion but not $8-10 like they were around January
Marx in shambles
maybe his gym nutritionist is preparing him for the World Series of Farting.
Coleslaw and beans milkshake
caffeine, raw broccoli and deviled eggs Pre-Workout shake followed by a series of naps.
though that may be more for the World Series of Diarrhea.
Depending on where you live, anyone can call themselves a nutritionist.
yeah in the US the legit title is “dietician” which unfortunately sounds more fake.
One of my pet peeves is people doling out advice for science and medicine way outside of their field. Like this guy probably took a 10 hour online course to tell people to eat more cheap protein.
Although teen me absolutely had 6 eggs for breakfast to bulk up. And then absolutely felt like shit for the next 4 hours.
I guess I did the same but my main message was go see a doctor instead of basing your health on instagram
Go SeE a DoCToR
Lol, this guy thinks we have “Doctor” money. Mods! We got one!
I got got
Lol. Personally, I’ve got Costco pharmacy money, at best. Which is good, because it’s right next to the protein supplement aisle.
Oh you’re absolutely correct. Fuck taking medical advice from laypeople.
Dude is just Gaston-maxxing getting ready to take out the prince ruling over his quaint provincial French village
He’s still 4 1/2 dozen short, rookie numbers
why are eggs specifically taxing on the liver?
or is it a broader thing about fat or something
im pretty sure the worst they could do is maybe tax your gallbladder a little with all the fat but I doubt 6 eggs is worse in that regard than llike, regular greasy fried foods
No actual idea but it’s kinda too much egga in general.
When eating too much greasy food I remember feeling like shit and burping egg smell despite not having eaten eggs nor any egg derivate, so people established “ah it must be the eggs that are bad for the stomach/liver/etc”.
I’ll remember this as the beginning of the ‘too much egga’ struggle session
mfw too much egga
Eggas houngry?
6? That’s like, how much I would use if I’m making pasta carbonara for the fam. And then we’d have leftovers for a day or two. He should be having like two mixed up with leftover veggies and some cheese as an omelet.
maxxing eat a family carbonara every morning
I heard Hasan say on stream he aims to eat 200+ grams of protein a day and the guy he was with (who I think is a dr?) agreed with that and I knows he’s a big guy but my vegan ass feels like those #’s are crazy
Hasan is tall and carries a ton of muscle, very plausible he’s over 200 edit:lbs and 1g of protein per edit:lb of bodyweight is common for someone who wants to be muscular and lifts a lot. It’s usually a pretty tedious diet if nothing else
That dude is absolutely not over 200kg.
(For Americans, that’s 440 lbs.)
Damn, I tried to do the conversion myself and messed it up
very plausible he’s over 200 kg
Is this a joke
He’s been cultivating mass beyond anything we’ve seen before.
Piker has the density of a dying star pass it on
He is revolutionizing the mass
Dr. Mike Israetel?
Idk much about him but I think someone on here said he believes in Race Science. He has a PHD in something though so yes he is a doctor of some kind.
The general consensus ranges from 0.8-1.2 grams of protein per pound you weigh. I don’t track my macros since I’m lazy and also I haven’t gone to the gym in a month due to an injury.
Protein supplementation has gotten pretty good recently, there’s protein lemonades made from whey isolate that are pretty much only getting their calories from the protein itself, and using artificial sweeteners for the flavor.
It does get taxing to eat it all, but I eat vegetarian every day except for when I visit my parents, and it isn’t too hard getting enough in to see gains being made
I eat vegetarian every day except for when I visit my parents
most morally consistent vegetarian
LMFAO.
My partner is vegetarian so we both cook foods we can both eat. I have brown parents though and they’re not too accommodating with me.
The general consensus ranges from 0.8-1.2 grams of protein per pound you weigh.
It absolutely is not. That’s the consensus (of scientists not personal trainers) of grams per kilogram you weigh
I just follow this guy: https://jeffnippard.com/blogs/news/the-smartest-way-to-use-protein-to-build-muscle-science-explained
He says: Bulking - 0.7-1g per pound Cutting - 0.8-1.2g per pound
He is a personal trainer, and specifically a trainer/coach for professional bodybuilders. This is broscience and simply not reasonable advice for normal people. Normal people (like you, like me, like basically everyone even if you exercise by weight training) need normal amounts of protein.
They should probably get a second opinion from ChatGPT just to be safe.
